New Openings at MERL

We are happy to announce several new openings for MERL’s sensing team. As I always like to mention, MERL is a great place to work, and has a great research environment. We are a very diverse lab, with expertise in a large variety of disciplines. Our relatively small size enables very fruitful interaction among us. Even within the computational sensing team, the diversity is evident in these openings.

One of the openings is for a postdoctoral researcher in signal processing, with particular emphasis on signal acquisition and active sensing technologies. We are looking for a person to assist us in a number of very interesting sensing projects, with several publications and patents expected. The posting here:

We also have several, more specific, internship openings in sensing, processing and control, all listed below. Interns are typically involved in one project, guided by one or more researchers. We expect that the work will lead to at least one publication and/or patent for each internship.

Internship Opening: Sensor Fusion

We have a new internship opening at MERL in the area of sensor fusion. The posting follows:

MM880: Sensor fusion

MERL is looking for a well qualified individual to develop novel technologies for sensor fusion. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in depth sensing, computer vision, and/or image processing. Familiarity with calibrating optical systems is a plus. The work will involve the development and implementation of relevant algorithms in MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++. The intern will collaborate with MERL researchers, conduct experiments, and prepare manuscripts for academic publications. The duration of the internship is expected to be at least 3 months; dates are flexible. Graduate students at any level of their degree program are encouraged to apply. Follow this link to apply.

MERL Opening in Sensing

We are very happy to have a new opening at MERL in the area of signal acquisition and sensing. MERL is a stimulating place to work with very talented staff and great research output. One of the few industrial research labs still encouraging fundamental research, engagement with the academic community and publication of our results. We are looking for very talented individuals who can contribute to our environment. The posting for our position follows and you can also find it on MERL’s website:

MM2 – Multimedia / Member Research Staff – Signal Processing

MERL invites applications for an exceptional researcher in the signal processing area, with a particular emphasis on signal acquisition and active sensing technologies. Applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Candidates at all levels of experience will be considered.

The successful candidate will have an extensive signal processing background and experience with sampling, array processing and signal acquisition technologies. Familiarity with related techniques such as compressive sensing and convex optimization is expected, and specific experience with signal acquisition via ultrasonic, radio, optical, or other sensing modalities is highly preferred. Applicants must have a strong publication record in these areas demonstrating novel research achievements.

Responsibilities for this position include:
  • Conduct innovative research on active sensing and signal acquisition technologies;
  • Propose new research directions in the signal processing area and collaborate with others in an inter-disciplinary and open work environment;
  • Publish results in major international conferences and peer-reviewed journals, and maintain a presence in the academic community;
  • Prepare patent disclosures on newly developed work and assist legal department in finalizing patent applications; and
  • Assist in the transfer of developed technology to the R&D labs of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.
Interested parties should submit their application to Dr. Anthony Vetro at avetro[at]merl[dot]com.
